Median 233 pages in grades 6–8 versus 281 pages in grades 9–12 — high-school assignments run about 48 pages longer at the median.
What is the 3rd-grade cliff?
The jump from picture books to chapter books shows up sharply in list data: the median assigned book goes from 41.5 pages in 2nd grade to 160 pages in 3rd — a 3.9× jump in a single grade. No other grade-to-grade step comes close.
How long is the average novel in general?
Published estimates for adult trade novels vary by genre and methodology, so we don't republish them — this page reports only what we compute: school-assigned books. For elementary through high school, the medians above are the sourced answer.
